3 Simple Feng Shui Habits That Can Make a Big Difference in Your Life

I’m a big believer in the power of small habits. Not the kind that require a complete overhaul of your life, but simple things you can do consistently that make a difference in how you feel.

Part of what I love about Feng Shui is that you don’t have to make dramatic changes to your home to get great benefits.

Here are three amazingly simple habits that can shift the energy of your home, help you feel accomplished, and genuinely make life feel better. And when you feel better, everything else in life seems to flow so much better as well.

If you already do these — amazing. Keep going.

If you don’t — they’re simple habits worth trying.

1. Make Your Bed Every Morning

Mom was right. And Feng Shui loves this.

If we had to choose one room as the most important in Feng Shui, it would be the bedroom. It’s the inner sanctuary within the sanctuary of your home — the place where you rest, restore, and recharge. You could have a tidy bedroom, but if the bed is unmade, it changes the energy of the entire room.

When you make your bed first thing in the morning, you’ve already accomplished something. Do not underestimate the power of this.

At the end of the day, when you return to a neat, made bed, your body relaxes more easily. It’s good for the energy of the room — and for the energy of your body and mind.

Retired Navy Admiral William H. McRaven gave a commencement speech at the University of Texas that later inspired his book, Make Your Bed. His message was simple: Making your bed every morning gives you an immediate sense of accomplishment and helps build momentum for the rest of your day. And even if the day doesn’t go as planned, you return home to a bed you’ve made.

Pretty impressive for a simple habit!

2. Do the Dishes

Your whole kitchen could be clean, but if the sink is full of dishes, it changes the energy of that entire space. Our kitchens are incredibly important in Feng Shui. They represent nourishment, prosperity, and health.

I do try to do mine as I go through my day — try being the operative word. Sometimes I don’t have time. I need to be somewhere, or I am jumping onto another Zoom. But after years of practicing Feng Shui, I know how much better I feel when the kitchen is clean. So I make myself a promise: by the end of the day, the dishes get done.

Just as making your bed starts your day, doing the dishes finishes it. There is something deeply calming about knowing you won’t wake up and walk into a messy kitchen the next morning. It brings a sense of completion — and peace.

A clean, uncluttered desk with a laptop, open notebook, coffee cup, and flowers. Quote reads: “Clear desks are like clear minds—both make room for better thinking.”

3. Clean Your Desk or Workspace at the End of Each Day

I will admit it — oddly, I am a messy desk person. I don’t quite understand how this happens, other than that I’m usually working on more than one thing at a time. Even when I clean my desk at the end of the day, as soon as I start working again, there’s stuff everywhere.

This habit requires discipline for me — but I can honestly say it is life-changing. Of these three habits, this one is the most challenging for me personally — but it’s also the most powerful.

When I walk into my office in the morning and my desk is clear, I feel it immediately. I feel calmer, lighter, more in control, and mentally clearer. And interestingly, opportunities tend to flow more easily when I’m consistent with this.

Whether this is your desk in a home office, an office you commute to, or even your dining table, putting your work away at the end of the day matters. (And if you work at your dining table — please, please, please put everything away.)

In Feng Shui, we say space equals opportunity — which is why decluttering is so important. When I clear my desk at night, I’m energetically creating space for what’s next.

There is also science behind this. Research in neuroscience has shown that multiple objects in our visual field compete for our brain’s attention. So when we’re surrounded by clutter, it can be harder to focus on what we’re actually trying to accomplish.

And when we work from home, this habit becomes even more important. Without a commute, it’s easy to work longer and blur the lines between work and personal time. Clearing your desk at the end of the day becomes a reset — a signal to your nervous system (and the universe) that your workday is complete.

This is also very helpful in establishing healthy boundaries.

Small Habits, Big Changes

Don’t underestimate the power of these three simple habits. Practice them consistently, and you may be surprised by just how much of a difference they make in your life.

When you feel more in control of your environment, you feel more in control of your life. This is one of the many benefits of Feng Shui. And with all the chaos in the world right now, that goes a long way.

There are many wonderful books and articles on the power of habits, but here are three of my favorites:

  • Atomic Habits by James Clear
  • Badass Habits by Jen Sincero
  • The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson

Your home is an extension of you. Everything you do for your home — from simple things like washing dishes to bigger rituals and room makeovers — is also a way of taking care of yourself.

We often say in Feng Shui: change your space, and you change your life.

And sometimes, that change begins with something as simple as making your bed.
