Helpful People and Travel Gua: Inviting Support Into Your Life

The Helpful People and Travel Gua

In Feng Shui, we often talk about creating spaces that support different areas of our lives, including relationships, prosperity, health, and career. But another important area of the Bagua often gets overlooked and deserves attention: the Helpful People and Travel Gua.

This area can represent our support systems, such as the people we know and the unexpected connections that come our way. Traditionally, it also represents the “Main Man” energy within the home.

When we use terms like “Main Man” and “Main Woman” in Feng Shui, we’re speaking about archetypal energies. The “Main Man” could be the husband, father, or oldest son. It’s the person with the primary male energy in the home. If you’re a man who lives on your own, this energy represents you.

Where Is the Helpful People and Travel Gua?

If the concept of the Bagua is unfamiliar, it is an energetic map in Feng Shui that represents different areas of life. We use it as a tool to explore the connection between what’s happening in a person’s life and how their space may be affecting or reflecting it.

In the modern Western style of Feng Shui that I practice, we orient the Bagua from the entrance to your space, usually the front door.

If you picture an imaginary tic-tac-toe grid over the floor plan of your home (house, apartment, studio, etc.), the Helpful People and Travel Gua is the lower-right 1/9th of your space, as viewed from the entrance looking inward.

Look at that area to see what’s going on. The 1/9th area doesn’t have to be exact. We’re dealing with energy, not rigid lines.

The People Who Support Us

Beyond energetically supporting the “Main Man,” this area represents the helpful people in our lives.

These come in many forms: a real estate agent if you’re looking to buy or sell a home, a lawyer, banker, clients, benefactors, teachers, mentors, people in your support or networking systems, employees, the babysitter, the Feng Shui consultant 😊—just to name a few.

Sometimes helpful people appear in unexpected ways, like a chance meeting that changes the direction of our lives.

Travel is another aspect of this Gua. When we travel, we often rely on others’ guidance and hospitality, whether we’re staying at a hotel, visiting friends, or exploring somewhere new.

There is also a deeper metaphysical aspect to this area.

The corresponding I Ching hexagram, ☰, represents Heaven. In Feng Shui, Heaven symbolizes blessings, guidance, support, and the unseen forces that help us along our path.

If you resonate with angels, religious figures, or gods and goddesses, this can be a wonderful area to display symbols that are personally meaningful to you.

Enhancing this area can also help you establish boundaries, create structure, and gain clarity in life.

Take a Look at Your Space

When we look at specific areas with our Feng Shui eyes, we want to look objectively and notice what’s happening there.

Ask yourself:

  • Does it feel cluttered?
  • Does it feel cared for?
  • Is this a place where I want to spend time?
  • What kind of imagery is there?
  • Are there unfinished projects?
  • Are we keeping too many things from the past?

This work has so many layers, but those are a great starting point.

If the area feels great, wonderful! Just keep it maintained. But if it could use a little TLC, here are some ways to enhance it.

Ways to Enhance the Helpful People and Travel Gua

The element associated with this Gua is Metal.

Here are some ways to bring that energy into your space:

  • Actual metal objects: Silver, gold, brass, copper, iron, and stainless steel. A silver vase or decorative metal bowl works beautifully here.
  • Photos of helpful people: Favorite mentors, supportive people, relatives who have passed, or people you admire. Place their photos in metal frames, and you’ve incorporated both the Helpful Person and Metal elements.
  • Metallic finishes: Metallic wallpaper, painted surfaces, or metal furniture.
  • Round objects: A round table, round lighting fixture, or other circular accessories.
  • Colors: White, grays, metallic finishes, and pastels.
  • Patterns: Circles and polka dots represent Metal energy.
  • Aromatherapy: Scents traditionally associated with Metal energy include chamomile, clary sage, eucalyptus, thyme, bergamot, and grapefruit.
  • Sound: Music featuring bells and chimes, or the sound of metal wind chimes.

As always, choose enhancements that resonate with you and feel good in your home.

Each Gua represents a different family member, and using Feng Shui tools to support them is one way to use this incredible modality.

If you’re a single male, you can use these ideas for yourself. If you’re part of a relationship or family dynamic, you can use them to support the “Main Man” in your life.

Ultimately, everyone benefits.

Making Room for Support

We often think we need to do everything ourselves, but sometimes we need to practice letting ourselves receive support.

Whether that support comes from a loved one, a mentor, a trusted professional, or an unexpected opportunity, life has a beautiful way of sending us the right people when we’re open to receiving them.

And if you’d like help creating a home that feels more aligned and supportive, I do offer Feng Shui consultations both virtually and in person in the Los Angeles area.
